U.S. auto safety regulators have launched an investigation into nearly 75,000 Nissan vehicles following reports of unintended side airbag deployments. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is focusing on 2015 model year Rogue Select vehicles after receiving complaints that side airbags deployed unexpectedly when doors were closed or slammed.
The NHTSA expressed concerns that these inadvertent deployments could result in occupant injuries or a loss of airbag protection in the event of an accident. Nissan has yet to comment on the investigation.
This probe comes shortly after Nissan and the NHTSA issued a warning to owners of nearly 84,000 older vehicles in the U.S., urging them to stop driving immediately due to a critical safety hazard related to unrepaired Takata airbag inflators. The affected models include the 2002-2006 Nissan Sentra, 2002-2004 Nissan Pathfinder, and 2002-2003 Infiniti QX4, all of which were recalled in 2020 but have not been repaired.
Takata airbag inflators have been linked to more than 30 deaths globally, including 27 in the United States, and over 400 injuries since 2009. These inflators can explode, releasing metal shrapnel inside vehicles, posing severe risks to occupants.
